ARIUNDLE OAKWOODS/LEAD MINES
ARIUNDLE OAKWOODS AND THE OLD LEAD MINES
Distance: 10.5 kilometres.
Time: 4 to 5 hrs
Map Sheet: OS Explorer 391 and OS Landranger 40
Walk Grade: Easy/Moderate. Circular route with some slight changes in direction on the return leg.
This is an excellent walk which follows a well-defined track up the glen through the woodland and eventually comes out onto the open hill with the path becoming faint in places, but you can see ahead of you the spoil heaps from the mine workings. Once up here you get beautiful views of Druim Garbh (Rough Back), Sgurr Dhomhnill (Donalds Mountain) and Sgurr na h-Ighninn (Daughters Mountain). You can also see into one of the old mines for about 15 metres; this mine can be hard to find as a small tree and undergrowth partially hide it. This walk can be extended to take in the three high summits. However, doing this will increase the distance and timing.
